Maybe you’re regretting even considering taking on such a laborious task on your own and frantically thinking of excuses as to why the project couldn’t go ahead? Take a deep breath; we’re here to help. We have put together an essential checklist that will be sure to help your DIY loft conversion be a success. Read on to learn more.

Rules and Regulations

The potential value that a loft conversion can add to a property makes it the smartest and most profitable ways of renovating, and it is a great way to add extra square footage without having to encroach on the garden or interrupt the flow of the rest of the house. This, however, does not mean that every loft can be converted in the same way, or even at all. There are certain rules and regulations that must be taken into account before getting started with your project.

Planning Permission – Planning permission will not be required for the majority of loft conversions, however, for larger scale projects or plans, to make significant changes to the external appearance of the roof, permission may be required. It’s always better to be safe than sorry!

Party Wall Agreement- If work is going to be carried out on a wall that is shared with an adjoining property, a party wall agreement will be needed. This is to inform your neighbours of the work you intend to do and give them a chance to dispute it. So, it’s always beneficial to be on good terms with your neighbours!

Fire Safety- For obvious reasons, it is imperative that fire safety is taken into account when planning your DIY loft conversion. All doors and exits must be fire resistant to FD20 standards, and any walls are required to achieve at least 30 minutes fire resistance. Furthermore, there must be a mains-powered smoke detector fitted.

Insurance- Be sure to contact your insurance provider to check that your cover will not be affected. Due to the extra risks that are present during a loft conversion, some insurance companies will need to amend your cover.

Starting My Loft Conversion

You’ve taken care of all the checks that need to be done before your DIY loft conversion get underway. Now it’s time to start the build! But how do you choose the right materials? Should you get a cordless screwdriver or go for a complete cordless kit? Who can you trust to carry out the building? Avoid the dodgy deals and cowboy builders by reading on.

Do I Need an Architect? – An architect has the ability to help you through the design and construction process of your loft conversion, and would be highly recommended how those of you who have never taken on a large project before. They can be pretty pricey though, so if the budget is an issue then you are definitely able to get by without one – if you’re feeling confident enough.

Loft Boarding- With the winter months drawing near, quality loft boarding is an essential part of a successful loft conversion, as it effectively retains heat that would usually escape through the roof of the property. This helps create a cosy home and could also potentially save you a lot of money in heating bills. An award winning loft boarding from Instaloft will deliver excellence for a great price, and can offer the peace of mind that you may not get with other loft boarding services.

Be Sure to Check Accreditation- Nobody wants to see Dom Littlewood at their door with a camera crew, asking them about their horrendous experience with a cowboy builder. Do your research! Find reliable builders with many years’ experience for a top quality job.
