The 6 Scariest Basements in Movies

Basements have become a well-worn trope in film and TV. However, that doesn’t mean it’s gotten any less scary over the years. In fact, there are many terrifying basements in movies and TV shows, starting from some of the earliest horror movies and continuing to movies that are being released today. If you’re looking for an ultra-scary basement, consider one of these scariest movies in film.

6. The Amityville Horror – 5.8 Basement Evil Score

This movie is even scarier because it’s based on a story rumored to be true. There are many horrifying moments in The Amityville Horror, and the actual architecture of the Long Island house is one of them. The four foot by five foot hidden room in the basement is painted red, and it lends an air of terror to these scenes.

5. A Nightmare On Elm Street – 6 Basement Evil Score

By playing with the ideas of a “dream world” and a “real world,” A Nightmare on Elm Street is able to craft a truly terrifying storyline. In the “dream world,” characters refer to Freddy’s boiler room as the Nightmare Factory because he uses it for torture and murder. Plus, the movie’s uncertain ending leaves the movie open to the possibility that characters never actually got away from Freddy, and they’re going to have to fight him all over again.

4. Psycho – 6.6 Basement Evil Score

Psycho introduced a variety of tropes to the world of horror and the world of film as a whole. Who could possibly forget the squealing of the violins as a character meets her end in the shower? In all the movie’s terror, one extremely spine-chilling moment occurs when the main character goes into the home’s underground fruit cellar, where she discovers Norman Bates’ mother’s mummified corpse.

3. The Evil – 9 Basement Evil Score

In The Evil, the basement is literally a portal to Hell, making it easily one of the scariest basements on this list. A home built over “sulfur pits” in New Mexico turns into a bloodbath after the characters in the home realize that the basement is an actual portal to Hell, and opening the basement unleashes a torrent of demonic activities. The movie follows the ups and downs of these characters attempting to escape the demons.

2. Get Out – 9.6 Basement Evil Score

By relying on traditional horror stereotypes and then subverting them at the last moment, Get Out manages to make an already-scary concept even scarier. The classic design of the colonial house in Get Out lures watchers into a sense of security, but the actual goings-on are terrifying. The basement includes a laboratory for transposing consciousness; the main character gets strapped to a chair and hypnotized, after which he goes to the horrifying Sunken Place.

1. The Silence of the Lambs – 10 Basement Evil Score

At the top of this terrifying list is The Silence of the Lambs. Not only is this movie incredibly scary all on its own, as the plot hinges on one serial killer giving the protagonist information about another serial killer, but the basement is one of the scariest around. The serial killer Buffalo Bill utilizes the dry well in his basement as a place to kidnap and starve women, making it easier for him to skin them after they die.

Conclusion

These basements are definitely some of the scariest basements in the world of horror. Even though they don’t necessarily encompass all the scary basements out there, or even the scariest possible basements, they’re a great place to start if you’re looking for some basement horror. Try out one of these movies if you’re looking for a new way to scare yourself.
